  6. About Morse Pad
  7. ==============
  8. Morse Pad is a simple "Text to Morse to Text" program.  It allows for manually
  9. input text to be sent in Morse Code at various speeds and frequencies.  This
  10. program can be used as a practice device or as just another gadget to have
  11. handy during those long QSO parties.

  15. Installing Morse Pad
  16. ====================
  17. Please consult your documentation for NPI (Newton Package Installer), NCU
  18. (Newton Connection Utilities), or any similar Newton Package installer
  19. application.  Using an application supporting Newton Package installation,
  20. download the file (MorsePad.pkg) on to your Newton device.

  22. Using Morse Pad
  23. ===============
  24. After downloading the package on to your Newton device and placing it in a
  25. folder, select the folder and click on the Morse Pad icon. The program will
  26. open as a floating display.
  27.  
  28. Entering a word or phrase in the top "Text" window allows for conversion into
  29. morse code or for the original text to be sent in morse code via the speaker.
  30. Conversion into morse code is accomplished by clicking the "T->M" button.
  31. This will display the morse code equivalent of the original text in a
  32. (somewhat obscure) numeric representation.
  33.  
  34. Entering a morse code pattern will allow for the conversion of Morse Code to
  35. plain text.  Entering morse is accomplished by either directly writing the
  36. morse code pattern in the "Code" window, or by using the ".", "-", "/", and
  37. "del" buttons found below the "Code" window.  Characters are to be separated
  38. by a "/" character, and words are to separated by a "//" pattern.  In order
  39. to minimize recognition problems within the "Code" window, entring can be
  40. accomplished using a "numeric" representation.  Use "0" for a "/", "1" for
  41. a ".", and a "2" for a "-".  Morse Pad is able to handle any combination of
  42. numeric representations or "." and "-" characters.

  44. Between the two input windows are three buttons.  From left to right, they
  45. are the "Text to Morse" button, the "Send" button, and the "Morse to Text"
  46. button.  The "send" button will only read the contents of the "Text" window.
  47.  
  48. Below the "Morse Code" window are two pickers.  The first is to select how
  49. fast (or how many words per minute) Morse Pad will send its text.  The
  50. currently available selections are 5, 10, 15, and 20 words per minute.  I
  51. can't seem to get the Newton to transmit cleanly, consistently, and to a
  52. degree that I deem acceptable at rates faster than 22 words per minute.

  54. Below the 'Words per minute' picker is the 'Frequency' picker.  The current
  55. selections available are 440, 500, 820, 880, 1000, 1760, and 2000 Hz.  Since
  56. this is a morse code app, I didn't find it necessary to allow for a fully
  57. selectable frequency range.

  59. Finally, there are two smaller buttons on either ends of the bottom corners.
  60. The left is the 'Info' button and the right is the close button.  Pressing
  61. the close button will close the program, while pressing the info button will
  62. allow access to the About button, which in turn opens the about box.

  64. Removing Morse Pad
  65. ==================
  66. Open the folder that the program is stored in and simply scratch-out the
  67. program icon... may you never find a need for this procedure.

  71. Morse Pad is freeware.  The distribution of this program must not include any
  72. fees not directly associated to shipping or media costs for the distribution
  73. process.  If you would like to include this program in a commercially
  74. available collection or package, please contact the author and ask for
  75. permission first!  Any form of distribution for this program must include (or
  76. made easily available) the following unmodified files:
